As you may know, congress passed a new law (CPSIA) in August 2008
designed to eliminate lead in children's products. While the intent of this
law is good, at the same time, it has proven to be quite challenging to
the children's resale industry.
For a couple of weeks, during our times of uncertainty as to what was
going to happen, we were not accepting children's items and had made
the decision to expand our JR's and maternity sections. But I am thrilled
to report that we have chosen to remain dedicated to being your
children's consignment store. We are making every effort to be
compliant to the new standards and following the recommendations of
the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
Some stores around the country have chosen to close due to the new
requirements. This is a tragedy for small, American entrepreneurs! The
effects of this law will have many casualties left in it's path. This is the
perfect example of why we must continue to fight for change in the
implementation of this law.
The way this new law is written is so complex that many people feel
they are incapable of compliancy. By educating ourselves to the facts
and by heeding the advice of the CPSC, we are confident that we will
remain compliant.
Many stores have fallen for the false report from the media that
consignment stores are exempt. By blindly believing what is reported,
more than likely, they will not dig in and do the necessary research
required to abide by the new safety standards.
Still, other stores have chosen the "I'll just play dumb" approach to the
new law. This is very scary! By taking this stance, these stores appear
not to even care about the new safety standards!
Rest assured, Cathy and I are doing constant research and study to stay
on top of the ever changing news and new requirements.
I have often said that you make our store what it is, that we have the
best consignors and customers! We do not take lightly the responsibility
we have to you and your family. Because safety is our number one
priority, we will do everything possible to continue to provide you with
safe, affordable products for your children. We are privileged to be the
store you have chosen for your children's resale services!
